For over 20 million Americans, vein problems cause leg pain and negatively impact quality of life.  Many people first notice their legs veins because they begin to appear unsightly, but vein problems can be much more than a cosmetic issue- some common symptoms that may indicate a serious vein condition include:

-Leg swelling, especially in the calves or ankles

-Legs that feel worse in the afternoon or evening, but better in the morning

-Muscle pain or cramping

-Leg aches or a feeling of heaviness

-Itching veins or skin

-Changes in skin color or texture

-Legs that feel restless

If you or someone you know has been suffering from any of these symptoms, you may benefit from a consultation with an expert vein MD.

Swollen Veins or Leg Pain Post Pregnancy?

Varicose drawing  varicose vein causes cartoon

Many women develop varicose veins during pregnancy.  For some women, their problem veins disappear shortly after delivery, but for many, their veins never return to their pre-pregnancy condition.  This is especially true for women who have had multiple pregnancies, or have twins or higher order multiples.

During pregnancy, a woman’s circulatory system goes through many changes.  The demand for increased bloodflow triggers an increase in the production of the hormone progesterone, which can also cause the vein walls to relax.  This, coupled with increased pressure from the growing uterus, puts a lot of strain on the veins in the lower body, which are already working against gravity to return blood back to the heart for circulation.  This pressure can cause veins to bulge and distend, resulting in blue or purple appearing veins that are visible through the skin.  Other symptoms may include:

  • Leg swelling, especially in the calves or ankles
  • Muscle pain or cramping
  • Leg aches or a feeling of heaviness
  • Itching veins or skin

If these symptoms do not resolve on their own shortly after delivery, it may be the case that the veins in the legs are not able to return to their normal, pre-pregnancy condition.  If left untreated, these symptoms often get worse with time.

At Bay Vein Associates, we have treated many women who suffer from vein disorder following pregnancy.  Some of these women have suffered from their problem veins and leg swelling for twenty or more years because they were not aware that there are simple, effective treatments for their vein problems that are covered by most insurance plans.

All scans and procedures take place in one of our convenient clinic locations. The first visit will consist of a detailed ultrasound that will help the doctor understand the condition of the underlying veins.  Following the ultrasound, patients will meet with the doctor to discuss the findings of the ultrasound and form a treatment plan.

Too many women endure the pain from vein disorders longer than they need to.  If you or someone you know has leg swelling, leg pain or vein pain following pregnancy, please contact us today to make an appointment.  We want to get you back to doing what you love- without the pain.

Teresa’s leg pain was keeping her from enjoying her activities

Teresa\

Teresa had been experiencing a burning sensation in her legs, and red, protruding, uncomfortable veins for over a year. Her leg discomfort was getting progressively worse and making it difficult to do some of the things that she really enjoyed, like bowling and gardening. To treat her pain, she was using ice packs, creams, and massage, but they provided minimal or no relief.

Then, Teresa’s cousin, who is also a happy patient of ours, told her about Dr. Lee.  During Teresa’s first appointment, Dr. Lee explained in detail what was happening with her legs and veins.  Teresa decided that she didn’t want to live with the discomfort in her legs and scheduled a simple procedure in our office.

Teresa says, “During the procedure, Dr. Lee made me feel comfortable and welcome the entire time.”  And after the procedure, “No symptoms!”

While we can not guarantee that every patient will have a story as remarkable as Teresa’s, we strive to provide expert care for leg and vein pain and have had many happy patients.  If your leg swelling or vein pain has been keeping you from enjoying the activities you love, please contact us for a Consultation with an expert MD.

Lynn suffered from severe calf pain, swelling & heat for 30 years!

Lynn Photo

Lynn suffered from daily pain, swelling, and heat- she would even ice her calves to ease the pain. More recently, the skin near her ankles was becoming discolored. Like many patients, Lynn was told repeatedly that there was nothing that could be done to treat her leg pain, and so she suffered with progressively worsening pain for nearly 30 years!

After visiting Dr. Lee and learning about her underlying vein disease – it’s called Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), and nearly 40 million Americans suffer from it- she decided to pursue treatment. Lynn says, “Dr. Lee thoroughly explained the disease to me and I was very prepared for my procedure.”

She quickly returned to normal activity and adds that her, “lower legs are great now, no pain no swelling or heat. Pain is gone from upper calf where I felt lots of pain at all times. I would definitely recommend (Dr. Lee) to friends.”

CVI is an extremely common disorder, and it is very treatable. All exams and procedures take place in one of our two convenient clinics, where our staff takes the time to fully explain the underlying causes and treatments for vein disease. Our Clinic Coordinator also handles all insurance authorizations, saving patients time and frustration.

If you think that you or someone you know has symptoms such as painful, heavy, swollen legs or vein pain, don’t wait a day longer – get back to the life you deserve- without the pain.

How frequently are men diagnosed with painful, swollen legs and vein disease?

varicose veins legs 1 calf pain male

Though it’s commonly thought of as a condition that affects mostly females, men are also highly susceptible to the problems caused by vein disease. In addition to the classic symptom of bulging, ropy veins, the most commonly reported problems are:

-Swelling
-Pain
-Cramping
-Itching
-Changes in skin color or texture

These are all signs that a patient may be suffering from Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), a condition that is highly hereditary and very treatable. Diagnosis and treatment is the same for both men and women- the main difference is that women may be more likely to seek treatment than men, which is significant because early diagnosis and treatment may prevent a host of problems from arising.

All of our treatments are office-based, and most patients return to normal activity on the same day. And if a patient’s symptoms are negatively affecting the patient’s quality of life, many insurance carriers will cover both the diagnosis and treatment, and Flexible Spending Account funds and make up any gaps.

If you believe that you or someone you know may be suffering from CVI, the first step is to schedule a Consultation with an experienced doctor.

At Bay Vein Associates, we focus on patient education, and our doctors and staff take the time to help patients fully understand the underlying causes of vein disease and treatments. Our Patient Care Coordinator handles all the scheduling and insurance authorizations, and can help patients navigate their coverage. Our focus is getting patients back to doing what they love- without the pain.

Meet Connie- No more Achy, Swollen, Heavy Legs

Connie

Connie had been suffering from painful, achy, swollen and heavy-feeling legs for over two years. She met Dr. Lee, who asked her about her legs and invited her for a Consultation. She found out that she was eligible for treatment, and that it was a covered benefit under her medical insurance.

“Dr. Lee did a good job explaining to me what was causing the pain in my legs and preparing me for what the procedure was going to be like. The procedure was not painful, and I went back to work the same day. I am pretty active.”

Prior to seeing us, Connie’s legs would feel heavy and achy at the end of each day. After the procedure, “I don’t feel the aches and the pain, and my legs aren’t heavy. I have already recommended this treatment to family and friends.”

Leg pain and swelling due to venous disorders affect millions of Americans. If you or someone you know is has symptoms like Leg Swelling, Heaviness, Changes in Skin Texture, or Vein Swelling, contact us to learn more or to schedule a Consultation.

Leg Pain doesn’t have to be part of aging

calf pain male calf pain diagram

Do you think that the pain and cramping in your legs is just a sign of getting older? CVI could be the root of the problem, and it is very treatable.

Leg pain and cramping is one of the most common signs of vein disease, a condition that is more common than one might think. Many sources cite the prevalence vein disease at up to 40 million Americans who are affected, about ⅔ of whom are women. Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a common vein disorder which causes backwards flow of blood from legs. This backward flow and pooling of blood can have many symptoms, including:

-Swelling, often in the ankles
-Muscle pain or cramping
-Aching or a feeling of heaviness
-Varicose veins, Spider veins
-Itching
-Changes in skin color.
-Skin sores (ulcers)

These symptoms often get progressively worse with time, and can interfere with a patient’s quality of life for years before they seek medical attention.

If you or someone you know is experiencing pain or discomfort in your legs, or have new varicose veins, you may be eligible for a Consultation with an experienced MD. All of our treatments are office-based, and patients generally return to normal activity the same day.

We want to help you get back to doing what you love, without the pain. Contact us to find out more.

Many primary care physicians are not aware of the most effective treatments for Swollen, Painful Legs.

Comp Hose Pink 1

After speaking with hundreds of patients and primary care physicians, we’ve come to realize that there is a lack of awareness about vein disease, which is often the culprit behind painful, swollen legs. We’re not trying to assign blame to the Primary Care community- they have their hands full with dozens of vital issues that need to be addressed in a short appointment, so swollen legs may not seem like a high priority.  And for the most part, when your doctor when to medical school, the treatments for vein disease were painful and ineffective.

More recently, advances in diagnosis and treatment have made curing vein problems and eliminating leg pain as easy as a few office visits.  In addition, we have also come to realize that swollen, painful legs can have a huge impact on a patient’s quality of life- many of the patients who we treat tell us that they have suffered from painful legs for 20-30 years before they found us!

At Bay Vein Associates, we believe that you don’t have to live with the pain.  Our vein treatment experts have helped hundreds of patients eliminate the pain and swelling in their legs and get back to the activities they love.

It starts with a Consultation with an expert MD in one of our convenient clinic locations- Pleasanton or Pinole.  If you or a someone you know has been suffering from painful, swollen legs, or any of the related symptoms below, contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Common symptoms of vein disease include:

  • Swelling in the lower legs and ankles, especially after extended periods of standing
  • Aching or tiredness in the legs
  • New varicose veins
  • Leathery-looking skin on the legs
  • Flaking or itching skin on the legs or feet
  • Stasis ulcers (or venous stasis ulcers)
